Pasadena City College’s Academic Senate Votes No Confidence in President

Pasadena City College’s Academic Senate voted on Monday to express no confidence in the leadership of Mark W. Rocha, the institution’s president and superintendent, according to the Pasadena City College Courier, the college’s student newspaper. Twenty-three senate members approved a resolution that accused Mr. Rocha of violating regulations of shared governance, with none voting against it and one abstaining.

The senate’s vote came as Mr. Rocha was trying to repair his troubled relationship with faculty and student critics. Some of them have cried foul over what they say was his unilateral effort to cancel the California community college’s winter term. Others have criticized the college’s decision to place the student newspaper’s faculty adviser on paid administrative leave.

Some on the campus have speculated that the move was prompted by Mr. Rocha’s dismay with the newspaper’s coverage, a charge that the president’s supporters deny. The college has said that the adviser was placed on leave while it investigates a complaint against him.
